Watson & Son is one of New Zealand’s leading honey producers, with more than 20,000 hives and 60 beekeepers working in some of the country’s most remote areas.
It’s headed by scientist, beekeeper and nature lover Denis Watson and his son Daniel, and based in the small rural town of Masterton in the Wairarapa region of the North Island.
In producing Manuka honey, Denis is following in the footsteps of his Māori ancestors. A proud descendant of the Chief Kahungunu, he considers the honey a taonga, or ‘treasure’. For this reason, the quality and purity of the product is of utmost importance.
Watson & Son carefully manage every stage of production to ensure that each pot can be traced back to the hive it came from. By working closely with local landowners and tribal groups throughout New Zealand, they can place the hives in vast areas of remote, unspoiled Manuka forests.
